3 Species That Get High More Than Humans Do

By: Alex Sherman

Alcoholic Bees

Thats right, you heard us, alcoholic bees. Apparently bees love to work hard and play hard. Their nervous system is similar to ours so the alcohol affects them the same, need we say more?

Jaguars High on Catnip

Well not really catnip, but close. Turns out jaguars love banisteriopsis caapi, a root found in the jungles of South America.

Like their catnip-loving cousins, Jaguars love to get high; yet their choice in intoxicants is considerably more kickass. The cats will search for the root and gnaw on them until they start to hallucinate. It is much more adorable than you would think, watch the video here.

Scientists say that Caapi contains many types of powerful MAOIs (chemicals found in antidepressants) which causes the animals senses to heightens as well as taking them on a little trip.

So how common is this?

Very, the plant heightens their senses so much yet does nothing beneficial for them biologically, therefore scientists have determined they know exactly what they are doing! Either way, there are plenty of jaguar junkies wandering around the jungles.

Capuchin Monkeys & Their Love for Millipedes (Say What?)

This is so weird, scientists have determined that both capuchin monkeys and lemurs in Madagascar have figured out that they can get a little high on certain insects.

There are 3-4 different species of millipedes that cover themselves in a poisonous gel when agitated and the lemurs and monkeys get high off of it!

The downside, because there always is one, is that the poison is also filled with cyanide. We all know cyanide is pretty much deadly to everything, but of course the fear of an excruciating death doesn't stop most from the opportunity to get high.

How common is this?

Scientist say that all capuchins do this, but we all know only the cool ones do.
