Composting And Why We Love Doing It...

Alright, this is a pet peeve of mine, and thank god it is not a big one or I would be making enemies in this industry.

We ALL know that composting is something everyone should do and in short this is why:

Composting not only helps your gardens is helps the earth. Even if you don't garden you should still compost, just throw the compost in the woods when it is finished. The fact is that millions (if not billions) of people throw their food in plastic bags. Plastic bags are not biodegradable, therefore the food from the earth goes into them and never has a chance to seep out into the earth like nature intended. My philosophy is "if it came from the Earth put it back"

So to compost correctly you can read thousands of blogs or product labels telling you to rotate the trays, add worms, provide drainage, etc. The blogs and product labels I have read in the past make the process a lot more complicated where complication is not needed. We are talking about mother nature which is complex in some ways but not in regards to composting.

All you need is an old trash can with a lid, don't go out and buy a new one. Find someone you know who has one or buy one from a yard sale (millions are made each day so lets remember to reuse the things already made because that is saving it from the landfills).

-Poke some holes in the bottom for drainage.

-Set it outside where it will get adequate sunlight (for cooking and speeding up the process)

-Throw whatever you want in it (except meat, that makes it an attraction to animals, I used throw my meat in the woods, now I am vegetarian so I don't worry about that)

-Close the lid

-Occasionally put some water in it or open the lid while raining to speed the process up even more

Voila! You have a compost machine.

You can add worms from the garden or go buy some and if you want to simplify the process even more and have the space (a.k.a. living in the more rural areas) you can just have a pile and cover it with a tarp to allow for heat containment.

This blog may be small but with the popularity of compositing growing each and every day I hope people will take a step back from the complexity of our lives today and make one of these to save money, save our landfills from even more plastic, and help our earth by putting back what we have taken.

Plus, your garden will LOVE it.
